“It was the first time it failed. The ritual had always worked, even the first time she performed it all those decades ago. But this time the old shaman's Jino-ji-goot, the ritual for guiding the dead to the underworld, failed. The spirit of the dead was stuck, trapped in the darkness between worlds. The shaman knew what horrors were surely tormented the spirit, what terrifying and relentless demons had blocked its passage. She had to finish the ritual. She had to go. She had to send herself into the darkness to guide the spirit home. She could do it, she was sure. She had that power. What she wasn't sure of was whether or not so could make it back out.”
